Model Airplane Project

Class

Engineering Design Analysis with SolidWorks

Skills

SolidWorks, Finite Element Analysis, additive manufacturing, and woodworking

I constructed a propeller-driven model airplane which had to fit constraints for woodworking and additive manufacturing. Since ants have been known to carry 50 times their own weight, I used finite element methods to demonstrate that the airplane can sustain a load that is 50 times its own weight. I used SolidWorks for GD&T and in designing the airplane. I used additive manufacturing to create the fuselage and used wood to create the wings.

I focused on ensuring the printed and wooden components worked well together while keeping the design lightweight and structurally sound. Using SolidWorks simulation, I paid attention to how the airplane would handle loading and where stresses would be highest. This helped me better understand how material choice and geometry affect overall performance.
