Coat Hook Project

Class

Design for Additive Manufacturing

Skills

SolidWorks, additive manufacturing, and materials testing

I created a coat hook in which I developed my own constraints for its design and fulfilled them. After multiple iterations in figuring out tolerances, I used multi-material and ordinary additive manufacturing techniques to create the coat hooks. I performed a progressive loading test on both coat hooks in which deflection and failure load were measured in each coat hook. Afterwards, I reviewed the differences in the results from the loading test in each coat hook.

I used CAD and an iterative design process to adjust the shape, tolerances, material use, and print setup for both hooks. Through modeling and hands-on fabrication, I made sure each design could be printed properly while still being efficient. The testing results showed how changes in material and additive manufacturing technique affected stiffness and strength, helping me better understand how to design effectively for single and multi-material 3D printing.
